On KRCL this morning they were talking about what people are doing to make this wonderful area of land we live in more "green" and one man's solution- earthworms.
Vermicompost is a nutrient-rich, natural fertilizer and soil conditioner made from earthworms and this got me thinking.
First I wanted my fly rod immediately, but then I was pulled into the tangible dream of driving around my biodiesel BWvan built with a transportable miniature greenhouse- right on the back of the van. And since I have never had a garden and don't exactly own a "green thumb" I'll bring in the caretakers- earthworms.
But how to get them... for those of you possibly who are from, or have relatives that live in the little hick towns scattered across the Western states you may have had this wet, slimy experience- harvesting earthworms.
First off, you need to push the notion of water conservation to the side and then flood your yard (unless you want to wait for the next thunderstorm). Evening, is the best time right about the time when the male crickets begin to chirp.
Get the lawn nice and wet. This could take a few hours- so go the drive-in watch a flick and then come back at 2 or 3am.
Everything should be in full swing now- the worms have surfaced. Select what you need, either by roundness, length, or color. Just watch your step.
